BELGRADE Serbians welcomed in the New Year across the country by celebrating in open air concerts, restaurants, cafes, and in their homes. Tens of thousands of revelers gathered in downtown Belgrade for a concert and fireworks, while many others, notably a large number of guests from abroad, chose restaurants of the city's bohemian Skadarlija neighborhood. In Nis, Mayor Zoran Perisic also took to the stage to wish a happy New Year to those gathered for an open air concert. A large number of Bulgarian citizens chose to spend the holiday in Nis, said reports from this town. More than 20,000 people gathered in a square in the winter resort of Mt. Zlatibor in western Serbia for what reporters said was a great celebration that continued well into the early hours of Wednesday. Many also spent the night working, and PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic toured MUP's Command-Operational Center Belgrade, where officers on duty told him the night was going without any major incidents.
