BELGRADE Aleksandar Djordjevic said on Wednesday that he did not think twice when the Basketball Federation of Serbia invited him to be the national team's new head coach. "I accepted the invitation immediately. I have great energy and enthusiasm and I want to share that with the players. I would like to thank the basketball community for their support," the Serbian basketball legend said in his introductory press conference at the House of Basketball. Basketball boss against foreigners in national squad "We are no longer a basketball power, but that does not take away our right to become one again. The question is whether we're prepared for more work and sacrifices in order to achieve that, whether the players are prepared. I think that team-wise we are becoming more mature, they are all in the right clubs in the country and abroad," Djordjevic said. The issue of allowing foreigners to play in national teams has been debated in the past years, as this is something almost all neighboring countries have done. But Djordjevic is against that: "I am not in favor of this idea to give foreigners passports and let them play for the national team." Djordjevic replaced Dusan Ivkovic at the helm of the Serbia squad. Ivkovic held the position since 2008 and decided to withdraw after the European Basketball Championship in Slovenia in which Serbia came out seventh. Djordjevic started playing basketball in Partizan, the team with which he won the European Basketball Champions Cup in 1992. After the Belgrade “black-and-whites”, he played for Olimpia Milan, Fortitudo Bologna, Portland Trail Blazers, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Scavolini. As part of the Yugoslav national team, he won three European Championships, one World Champion title and a silver Olympic medal. Djordjevic started his coaching career in the season 2006/2007 as the head coach of Olimpia Milan, and took over the Treviso-based Benetton in the season 2011/2012. (Tanjug) B92 Tanjug
