BELGRADE B92 has strongly condemned incidents at a polling station in the municipality of Odzaci on Sunday, when reporters were targeted during local elections there. The polling station in Backi Gracac was closed because of a fight that previously broke out. When TV crews arrived they were assaulted by the citizens gathered there who were still arguing among themselves. Election day attacks on reporters condemned B92 reporter Jovana Stetin and cameraman Dejan Goljevac, as well as Prva TV repoters Biljana Gavric and Lazar Vukadinovic were all targeted, but were protected by the police at the site. However, the officers advised the reporters to leave, as they "could not guarantee they could fend off the next attack." B92 journalists have been subjected to threats and physical attacks for years, to such a degree that some have been given around the clock police protection, as they to do their job - report about events and topics that the public has a right to know about in a professional manner. B92 issued a statement on Sunday pointing out that as the UN Security Council is discussing a Reporters Without Borders initiative to treat attacks on journalists in crisis regions as war crime, journalists are exposed to attacks in Serbia even in peacetime. Attacks staged by hooligans and violent persons endanger not only the safety of reporters, but also the free flow of information. B92 asked in its statement whether reporters in the 21st century in Serbia were even able to do their job without police protection, and noted that during the incident on Sunday, the police were unable to completely fend off the attackers, and in that way failed to live up to their obligation to guarantee the right to the freedom of expression. B92 is demanding that all those taking part in the election process condemn attacks on reporters in the strongest terms, and from the authorities to urgently find the perpetrators. (Tanjug) B92
