Google Street View car spotted in Belgrade

BELGRADE -- Photographs of a Google Street View car taken in Belgrade have cropped up on the internet.

The photos were taken on Tuesday evening in Kraljice Natalije Street.

It is still unknown why one of Google's recognizable vehicles equipped with a large camera on its roof was in Belgrade, and whether it was already operational.

The website netokracija.com is reporting that Google's regional office did not offer any comment.

The tech giant several months ago filed a request with Serbia's Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Šabić to start using the technology here.

Šabić on Wednesday confirmed that Google was given the green light to start filming streets and buildings in Belgrade and elsewhere in Serbia "probably as early as next week," after the company complied with the conditions set by the authorities.

The commissioner noted that Google must announce ahead of time that it intends to film on a location, and would not be allowed to process data collected from wireless networks. Google must also "anonymize data on the persons in the footage that will be made public," said Šabić.

Meanwhile, Trade Ministry official Stefan Lazarević posted on his Twitter account that "the paperwork was completed" several days ago to allow Google Street View in Serbia.
