BELGRADE - Around 24,000 miners is Serbia mark the Miners' Day today. The Miners’ Day was established in memory of the first strike of miners on August 6, 1903. The strike was launched in Senje mine, the first and oldest pit in the country which is today a part of coal mine Rembas. Serbia marks Miners' Day Today It was held by workers who were dissatisfied with poor financial and working conditions and following an incident having happened a week earlier which claimed the lives of an entire shift of miners /on July 31, 1903/. The Senje coal mine strike was triggered by dismissal of three labor activists, half a century after the start of exploitation of the mine. Today Serbia's most important mines are Kolubara open pit mine as part of Elektroprivreda Srbije and copper mines of mining smelter basin Bor. According to data of the Serbian Ministry of Mining, 80 tons of ore are dug annually. The underground mines employ 5,500-6,000 workers. Today, miners in Serbia have special early retirement opportunities. However, their average salary is still low – ranges between 30,000 and 50,000 dinars. In spite of security measures, there are still mines where security is at a low level particularly the ones which have undergone unsuccessful privatization. Mihajlovic: Resavica miners safer from now on The Minister of Energy, Development and Environmental Protection Zorana Mihajlovic on Tuesday put into operation a station which will measure the level of methane at Public Company for Underground Coal Mining Resavica. The station enables automatic remote control of the air in the mining pit. "Today, on Miners' Day, we must remember those who lost their lives in the mines - since 1965, 450 miners have given their lives for the industrialization and mining industry of Serbia," said Mihajlovic, stressing the importance of the new safety system. The minister said that in the second stage, which should follow soon, the system will also measure the quantity of coal and expenses. Noting that a plan for the consolidation of Resavica was prepared jointly by the Ministry, company management and unions, the minister said: "We will certainly talk, and already are talking to strategic partners. This is not privatization, this is a chance to secure enough investments for this kind of equipment, a new thermal power plant, and new pits." Mihajlovic stressed the necessity of a strategic partner by pointing out that in the past seven years only 30 percent of planned investments were realized due to a lack of money. Director of Resavica Vladan Milosevic said the same safety system has been installed at the Soko and Rembas mines and there are plans to install it at other mines. /Tanjug, file/ Tanjug
