BELGRADE Tuesday marks the first day of the month of Ramadan, one of the two major Muslim holidays. Muslims in Serbia begin marking Ramadan Mufti Mustafa Jusufspahic yesterday congratulated all Muslims the upcoming holiday and called on all Muslims of Serbia to openly participate in numerous activities organized by the Islamic Community of Serbia. "Ramadan is an opportunity to learn and to realize that God has given us many opportunities to forgive us our sins. This is an opportunity to strengthen your character, for the fast to ennoble us, to feel compassion for those in need, to soften the soul, to purify ourselves from the hatred and malice, greed and pride, to wash our souls from sin and corruption," said Jusufspahic. The Muslim religious dignitary was reading the Ramadan message of the Islamic Community of Serbia in the Bajrakli mosque in Belgrade when he called on believers to, while fasting, not forget the poor and powerless around them, because the main purpose of fasting, as he said, was to "awaken compassion for those who are hungry and in need of help and love."
