Serbia's best tennis player beat Nadal in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) and scored his 15th victory over the Spaniard.

Đoković secured the first set after storming into a 5-0 lead, but the second set was a tight one, as the Spaniard moved to within a game of leveling. However, Đoković broke straight back to force the tie-break, which he took comfortably 7-1.

This is his 37th title.

Đoković stated that his first trophy in Monte Carlo is of special importance to him.

This title is very special to me, because I won it in the city I live in, he said in French, after singing along with the Serbian national anthem.

"Rafa, thank you for allowing me to win it once," Đoković said. "I couldn't ask for a better start to the clay season."
