BELGRADE This year's Month of Francophonie is dedicated to music, cinema, exhibitions, the French Institute announced at a press conference in Belgrade. French language competitions will also be taking place, according to a Tanjug report. Month of Francophonie kicks off in Serbia The Month of Francophonie opened on Tuesday evening with Bojan Zulfikarpasic's concert at Belgrade Center Sava. As part of its program, the Francophone Film Festival will open at Dom Omladine on Wednesday evening, which will include 12 new movies from Algeria, Belgium, Egypt, France, Canada, Switzerland and Serbia. Swiss Ambassador to Serbia and President of the Club of Francophone Embassies Jean-Daniel Ruch underscores that Francophonie is an everyday reality for more than 200 million people for whom French is the mother tongue, but also for the European Union, the United Nations and other international organizations in which French is a working language. "Francophonie is an expression of cultural diversity, as it is spoken on all continents every day. That diversity also affects the language and we take great pride in that and that obligates us to tolerance," Ruch said, noting that "International Organisation of La Francophonie" comprises 77 states - with Serbia as an observer country since 2006. "There are a number of reasons why it could be said that Francophonie has taken root in Serbia. The history of French language in Serbia is a long one. More and more people in Serbia are taking French lessons. The great credit for that goes to around 400 French teachers, among others," Ruch said. According to Tanjug's report, "in the entire world, March is traditionally associated with Francophonie". It celebrates the French language, and, it was said, "its beauty, richness and diversity".
