They beat defending champion Norway 34-31 (28-28, 24-24,12-11) following double extra time in the final match on Sunday evening.

According to reports, some 7,000 people turned out in Podgorica to welcome the team in the early hours of Monday.

The bronze medal went to Hungary, which earlier on Sunday beat Serbia 41-38 (33-33, 21-19), also after double extra time.

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić congratulated the national handball team on Sunday evening "for the amazing success they achieved by getting into the top four teams at the European Women's Handball Championship".

"Despite the lack of strong support from the stands, which were more often filled with fans of other national teams than ours, those of the host country, you represented Serbia in an honourable manner and showed to all who did not believe in you the way in which one should love and fight for their country and flag until there is strength and hope,“ Nikolić underlined in his congratulatory message, according to his press service
