BELGRADE Snow has been cleared from all major roads in Serbia, but the authorities are warning drivers to be cautious because of ice. The situation on Monday morning improved compared to yesterday, said MUP Emergency Sector chief Predrag Maric, and announced that a decision would be made during the day on whether to declare a state of emergency in one part, or the entire territory of the province of Vojvodina. All major roads passable, more snow expected Maric also said that at this point, no roads in Serbia are snowbound, while official reports indicate that two persons so far froze to death during this cold wave. Drivers can still expect five to ten centimeters of snow on roads of first and second priority throughout Vojvodina, as well as near Vranje, Nis, Pozarevac, Valjevo, Pancevo, in Kosovo, near Novi Pazar, Subotica, in the Backa region, near Kragujevac, Zrenjanin, Ruma, Zajecar, Krusevac, Uzice, Ivanjica, Cacak, Belgrade, and in throughout Macva and Kolubara districts. Underneath the snow, there is ice, which can pose great danger, public company Roads of Serbia and the AMSS announced. This is the case because of the extremely low sub-zero temperatures, despite the fact that the roads are being constantly cleared and salt spread to melt ice and snow. Currently, it is snowing only in the Dimitrovgrad area in southeastern Serbia. High winds have subsided on Mt.Kopaonik, but there is up to ten centimeters of snow on the road between Rendare and Jarma, so usage of snow chains is mandatory. The situation is similar on other mountain areas, including Goc, Zlatibor, and Divcibare. Passenger vehicles are waiting up to 30 minutes to cross the country's borders, it has also been announced. In Belgrade, where more snow has been forecast for tonight, the situation was under control on Monday morning. The traffic was slow in some parts of the city, but public transportation is functioning unimpeded, said Beograd Put (Belgrade Road) winter services manager Zoran Jovic. Meanwhile, Belgraders have been cautioned that they are under obligation to clear snow and ice, and in such a manner that will not clog street drains or get in the way of passers-by and cars. Those who fail to comply could face fines of up to RSD 1mn (some EUR 8,800). More photos (Beta) Beta Tanjug
