BELGRADE Serbian Patriarch Irinej has denied that the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Synod sent a letter to the state leadership regarding the situation in Kosovo. He told daily Blic that the letter, which strongly criticizes the state over its Kosovo policy, was not written by the Synod. Patriarch denies SPC Synod sent letter to state officials “This letter did not come from us and the Church will distance itself from the written and released letter,” Irinej said. When asked who the author of the letter was and who had sent it to media, Irinej said he did not know. “I do not know who could be the author or who forwarded it, as an alleged position of the SPC, to the media,” he stressed. The patriarch said that he had already presented his position on the situation in Kosovo. He stated earlier that Serbia should go toward the EU but that it should not renounce Kosovo for the sake of the EU membership. “If we have to renounce (Kosovo), thanks for the invitation, we will continue to live our difficult and hard lives we have lived in the past 500 years,” Irinej said at the time. Weekly Nedeljnik has reported that the SPC Synod has requested from the state leadership to reject the agreement on the integrated crossings management. However, the weekly also published an interview with Metropolitan Amfilohije who said: “President (Tomislav) Nikolic surely knows the opinion of the Church and its position that has not changed. The Synod informed him about the position in writing as well recently.” Amfilohije did not say whether he referred to the letter published by the weekly. Patriarch Irinej (Tanjug, file) Beta Blic
