BELGRADE Marking World Day Against the Death Penalty, Serbian officials recalled that our country abolished the practice in early 2002. The last time Serbia punished a crime by executing its perpetrator was in 1992, while ten years later, the country officially did away with the death penalty. "Serbia will never again execute human beings" Speaking on Wednesday, Deputy Citizens Ombudsman Milos Jankovic said that several thousand people were killed during the past year by those countries that still have the capital punishment. "Some 140 countries in the world today live without the death penalty, however, about 50 retained it, while 21 last year executed at least one person. During the past year in those countries, several thousand people were either hanged, shot or executed in another manner," he noted. On October 10, countries, organizations and individuals worldwide speak up to confirm their stance that the death penalty should be abolished everywhere, and their determination to make sure it is never reintroduced: "A coalition of organs and NGOs has been formed in Serbia, which considers it a fact that Serbia will never reintroduce the death penalty, and that Serbia will never again execute a human being," Jankovic said.
