BELGRADE A large wildfire has spread and it is now only three kilometers away from the Serbian Orthodox Monastery of Hilandar on Mt. Athos. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has declared a state of emergency at Mt. Athos. Serbian police (MUP) Emergency Situations Sector chief Predrag Maric told B92 that around 50 firefighters with the help of monks were clearing the area in order to make fire routes. 40 Serbian firemen were sent to Greece on Thursday to help their colleagues fight the wildfires. Maric said that the Serbian firefighters were alright and that the job is going well. A helicopter and two planes joined the operation on Friday. However, Maric said that there was hardly any effect since the area caught by the fire was extremely large. “It is a pine forest, there is a lot of resin and it burns quickly,” he explained.
