BELGRADE Maternity ward in the southeastern town of Aleksinac is one of the rare ones where the number of deliveries has not experienced fall in the last decades. However, the problem is in the fact that the newborns do not have anything to wear. "Our baby clothes should be put out of use, but we cannot afford to do that due to the current situation as we only have ten new that we bought on ourselves, so we save the old clothes for the occasion when the maternity ward is crowded with babies", chief nurse Natasa Kostic says. The mothers say that they are satisfied with the hospital staff, so they do not notice that something is missing. "Probably, what we need the most is the air conditioner and baby clothes, as I noticed it is old and worn-out. The treatment of the staff is quite contrary to the conditions they work in", Natasa Ostojic, one of the moms, says. Still, they surely notice that there are no delivery tables. "You can see for yourself. Those are in good shape as we keep them clean after every delivery. They are being carefully maintained. However, due to over-usage, they are on the verge of collapse. Sometimes, a spring or bolt or upholstery is missing, while sometimes it happens that the table simply crashes", Kostic added. Health Center Director Dr Goran Dzeladinovic says that, due to general crises in the health department, they often rely on the donors, which seems to be the easiest way to solve the problem. "The state is in such bad position that we know there are no funds available, but we try to provide the best conditions possible for our mothers-to-be. The staff members try to overcome outdated equipment they have on their disposal with their hard work, but this is simply not always possible", he explained. "The potentials are what they are - the photo lamp we have is very old, so the effects of the treatment are less effective, but we seem to manage somehow, along with our therapy of intravenous rehydration to offer assistance in accordance with the capabilities of our Health Center", pediatrician Dr Sladjana Matanovic Petrovic pointed out. Photo lamps and delivery tables are top priorities when it comes to the urgent needs of the Aleksinac maternity ward, the staff of this health institution claims, where 450 deliveries are being carried out on annual basis.
