A man in Kragujevac, central Serbia, on Wednesday committed suicide as court bailiffs were taking over his house, after he was unable to repay his bank loan.

A man in Kragujevac, central Serbia, on Wednesday committed suicide as court bailiffs were taking over his house, after he was unable to repay his bank loan. The man, identified with his initials as M.S., was the owner of a private company, and the building served as his family home and company offices, said reports. His wife was also in the house when the incident happened, while his daughter is said to have fallen ill and is now treated in the hospital. When the family failed to meet their loan obligations, the house was sold in an auction for a sum seven times less than its real value, said their lawyer Tatomir Lekovic. The buyer was "a man from Belgrade with suspicious capital, who owns gas stations". "The family were due to move out today and they rented an apartment. They pleaded with this tycoon to postpone the date for their eviction until after the extremely cold weather passed, but he did not accept that," Lekovic told reporters.
