About one million pieces of various firearms are legally in possession of the Serbian citizens, while 47,000 are found in the country's private security sector. This data is contained in a draft law that is meant to regulate the private security business in the country. Serbians legally possess 1 million pieces of weapons The government's draft said in the explanation that a further "944,000 pieces of weapons are illegally held by the citizens". At the same time, members of the country's interior ministry carry a total of 53,000 firearms. The draft, however, noted that there was no exact data regarding the private security sector, but that it employs "between 25,000 and 60,000 people", and that this market's value was some EUR 150mn in 2008. There are over 3,000 registered companies in the sector, but it is unclear how many are functioning at the moment, while a public opinion survey showed that 25 percent of citizens trust the sector, while 44 percent saw it as "contributing to a lack of security". The government has asked the Serbian parliament to debate the draft in urgent procedure, considering that the private security companies perpetrated "frequent serious overstepping of authority", while the MUP at the same time did not have the necessary authority to act against them - other than that related to all participants in the legal system and to legislation regulating arms and ammunition.
