A commemoration was held at a in Belgrade to honor the patriots whom the WW2 German occupation forces executed and hanged on August 17, 1941. On behalf of the Serbian government, Dejan Ristic of the Sector for the Protection of Veterans and Disabled Persons at the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy laid flowers in front of the memorial, while Austrian Ambassador Clemens Koja did the same on behalf of the diplomatic corps in Serbia. On August 17, 1941, the Nazi German forces who occupied Serbia arrested five members of the resistance movement in Belgrade, brutally tortured them and finally shot them in the yard of a building in Belgrade they had set up as the Gestapo HQ. The corpses were then left to hang from street light poles at Terazije Sq. with the aim of intimidating the citizens and discouraging them from fighting for their freedom. The crime is exceptionally important because of the manner of execution of Serbian patriots and its horrifying symbolism, Ristic said. He added that commemoration of the patriots' sufferings, which is organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy every year, constitutes an integral part of the efforts aimed at reviving the memory of anti-fascist fighters in all of Serbia.
