A big thunderstorm which lasted almost two hours on Monday caused flash flooding along the the Josanica and Trnavica rivers in southwestern Serbia. Over 1,000 homes in Novi Pazar have been affected, Deputy Mayor Vujica Tiosavljevic told reporters. Storms, floods hit southwestern Serbia Water levels started receding on Tuesday morning, but a state of emergency is still in force in the municipality. Tiosavljevic said that material damage was significant, adding that apart from houses, infrastructure was damaged as well, with the storm cutting off electricity and water supply in the part of the town near the rivers. The water swept five or six bridges and several cars, and the teams of the town administration, police and armed forces helped the jeopardized citizens in the field, he said. Meanwhile, the small town of Ljig in western Serbia, and Prokuplje in the south saw hailstorms which according to eyewitnesses "turned the streets white". Firefighters intervened in many places as basements and ground floors of private homes quickly filled with water.
