Belgrade to bid for European Capital of Culture

A committee set up to organize Belgrade's candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2020 will officially submit the bid to the EC in early December.

A committee set up to organize Belgrade's candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2020 will officially submit the bid to the EC in early December. This was announced at the promotion of this project at the Belgrade City Assembly on Thursday evening. Belgrade to bid for European Capital of Culture Committee Chairman and Deputy Secretary for Culture Aleksandar Pekovic stated that, in recent history, Belgrade did not have any significant strategic projects in the area of culture. This is an opportunity for an entire generation to reach a high goal and make their society better and recognizable in the world, to change the negative image of their people, show their specificities, their wealth of spirit, tradition, artistic potentials and creativity, Pekovic told Tanjug. Pekovic added that other candidates for 2020 European Capital of Culture are three cities in Romania and one from Ireland, even though Sibiu from Romania and Cork from Ireland had already been European Capitals. Belgrade to bid for European Capital of Culture

Committee Chairman and Deputy Secretary for Culture Aleksandar Peković stated that, in recent history, Belgrade did not have any significant strategic projects in the area of culture.

This is an opportunity for an entire generation to reach a high goal and make their society better and recognizable in the world, to change the negative image of their people, show their specificities, their wealth of spirit, tradition, artistic potentials and creativity, Peković told Tanjug.

Peković added that other candidates for 2020 European Capital of Culture are three cities in Romania and one from Ireland, even though Sibiu from Romania and Cork from Ireland had already been European Capitals.

This year's European Capitals of Culture are Istanbul (Turkey), Essen (Germany) and Pecs (Hungary).
