The second train involved was local. The accident happened near the border. Bulgarian railroad company director Pencho Popov told that country's state television that the cause of the accident was "probably human error" on the part of station managers in Dragojlo and Dragoman. Serbian Railways announced that the traffic was suspended on the line, that the cause of the collision remains unknown, and that the Bulgarian side has jurisdiction to deal with the details of the accident.
