The Belgrade City Assembly decided on Monday to make former Japanese Ambassador to Serbia Tadashi Nagai an honorary citizen. Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas explained why Nagai was proposed for such a recognition by noting that the Japanese government has provided close to EUR 200mn in aid to the Serbian people since 2000. Ex-Japan envoy is honorary Belgrader Djilas pointed out that Belgrade in particular owes Nagai a lot, because a lot of those donations went to the capital. "Nagai is a man who lived in Serbia for more than 20 years, speaks excellent Serbian and understands the situation in the country completely," Djilas stated. Belgrade Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Antic told Tanjug that Nagai will receive the recognition in late August.
