Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says the five MUP officers in Haiti, members of the UN peacekeeping operation there, will be promoted. “I have decided to promote and award our policemen who are in Haiti under the UN peacekeeping mission. They are really putting maximum effort not only into performing police work, but also into saving lives,” Dacic told news reporters in the town of Odzaci today. According to this, Serbia would in this way show that along with an integrated system of managing emergency situations at the state level, countries “should also participate in saving people at the level of the whole planet when such tragedies occur”. MUP’s peacekeepers deployed in Haiti, under the command of Maj. Biljana Lazarevic, joined the rescue efforts on the island after the devastating earthquake. She and fellow MUP officers Goran Panovic, Milos Rajovic, Bozidar Janjic and Slobodan Obrenovic reported to their commanders in Serbia last week that they would stay in Haiti until further notice – “since their mission is to help the people of Haiti, and especially in such a difficult situation.”
