GIK Prvi Maj construction company workers, who have been blocking an international railroad for over a moth, struck a deal with the company owners. But they will continue to block the tracks at the Lapovo, central Serbia, station, until they receive payments agreed upon today. Workers accept offer, still block railroad The agreement on fulfilling the striking workers' demands was signed by Prvi Maj Union President Novica Markovic and the privatized company's owner Velimir Radenovic. Radenovic owes his workers eleven overdue wages, and has also failed to make payments toward their pension and health insurance. Misel Nikolic, an assistant to the finance minister, was present as the agreement was signed this Thursday. According to the document, the workers will receive three monthly wages as specified in their contracts, while the remaining eight will amount to RSD 16,000 per month. Markovic, of the Prvi Maj union, said that the workers agreed to a compromise, since 70 percent of them decided not to press the execution of court orders that would seize the money from the employer. Radenovic said that he will make all the payments tomorrow at the latest, while Markovic explained that the railroad will not be unlocked before this in fact happens.
