The 95th anniversary of the start of the First World War Battle of Kolubara was marked on Tuesday in Lazarevac, southwest of Belgrade.

The 95th anniversary of the start of the First World War Battle of Kolubara was marked on Tuesday in Lazarevac, southwest of Belgrade. The central state manifestation to mark the anniversary was held at the Memorial Church of St. Dimitrije, where the remains of about 40,000 Serb and Austro-Hungarian soldiers were buried in the crypt. Anniversary of major WW1 victory The anniversary of this important historical event was also marked with state and military honors near the memorial Tomb to the Serb Soldier in Lazarevac. Representatives of the Serbian government and the Serbian Army (VS) took part, as well as those from the embassies of Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Russia and UK, and Serbian organizations set up to preserve the tradition of Serbia's wars of liberation. VS Chief-of-the-General-Staff Lt. Gen. Miloje Miletic stated during the ceremonies that the Battle of Kolubara was one of the greatest victories not only for the Serb army but also for the allies in the First World War. The battle, named after the Kolubara River in western Serbia, was fought from November 15 until December 15, 1914, in the broader northwestern area of the country. The Serb forces were commanded by Zivojin Misic and Radomir Putnik. Some 250,000 poorly equipped soldiers of the Kingdom of Serbia took on a superior invading force consisting of some 450,000 Austria-Hungarian troops, to defeat them and force their retreat from the country. One of the results of the battle was the liberation of occupied Belgrade.

The anniversary of this important historical event was also marked with state and military honors near the memorial Tomb to the Serb Soldier in Lazarevac.
