Workers of the GIK Prvi Maj construction company, who have been blocking a major railway for eight days now, will enter negotiations with company management. B92 has learned that the company from Lapovo, central Serbia, has secured money for paying all 11 wages that the workers are demanding, while the rest of their demands will be discussed on Monday between the workers and management with mediators from the Economy Ministry. Workers blocking railroad to enter talks Prvi Maj Union President Novica Markovic said that it is very possible that the workers’ demands will be accepted very soon. “We have received information that the employer has secured the needed money,” he said, adding that “we also have indications that the workers will meet with officials of the Economy and Regional Development Ministry who will present to them the proposal of the employer for fulfilling the rest of the workers’ demands.” The workers have been blocking the railway connecting Belgrade and Nis, and are asking for 11 minimal wages to be paid for this year, along with contributions for pension and health insurance. The privatized company's Director Velimir Radenovic said on Sunday that “it is realistic to believe that an agreement must be reached with the workers as soon as possible.” Radenovic did not want to speak in detail about the offer prepared by the company for the striking workers. The company was privatized three years ago and purchased for RSD 82mn (about EUR 863,000) by the Novi Sad-based Autovojvodina company. Prvi Maj has an administrative building, cement factory and about 20 hectares of land along the Belgrade-Nis highway.
