Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic met in Belgrade on Monday with Eurotransplant International Foundation President Bruno Meiser. People in need of organ transplants in Serbia have faced "a rather difficult path", Milosavljevic said, "but 1,314 kidneys, eight hearts and one pancreas have been transplanted since 1954, when the first transplantation surgery was performed", he added. In Europe, twelve people die every day awaiting organ transplantation, Milosavljević said.

According to him, Serbia has five institutions equipped to perform kidney transplants – the Clinical Center of Serbia, the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, the Military Medical Academy (VMA), the Children's Hospital in Belgrade and the Clinical Center in Niš.

Joining the Eurotransplant network, which includes about one third of Europe's territory or some 150 million people, chances of providing organs for transplants in time increase, said Milosavljević.
