Stormy winds and hail late on Friday caused extensive damage to 20 villages in western Serbia. Hailstones as big as walnuts and eggs destroyed some 1,000 hectares of orchards and wheat and corn fields in the municipalities of Krupanj and Osecina, and near the city of Valjevo, reports said. Hailstorm ravages western Serbia Roofs on houses and other structures were also damaged in the storm. "The cloud was 16 kilometers wide, and came from the Republic of Srpska, from across the Drina River. We fired some 200 anti-hail missiles from 40 stations, but that was not enough, because the cloud was very strong," explains Miodrag Stojanovic, who heads the Blizonjski Vis Radar Center near Valjevo. More than 30 stations equipped to fight hail-carrying clouds have thus been left without any missiles. Authorities have undertaken measures to send "at least several to each station", ahead of this afternoon, when new storms are expected. Ice from hail pellets was still seen on the ground in some of the affected villages a good 12 hours after the storm, reports said.
