On the plus side, men's world no. 3 Novak Đoković overcame Frenchman Jeremie Chardy in straight sets, Jelena Jankovic defeated Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 2:0 (6:3, 6:2), and Ana Ivanović also scored a straight sets win over Italian Alberta Brianti.

However, it was not such a good day for Serbia's other two representatives in the men's draw, Janko Tipsarević and Viktor Troicki. Tipsarević went down 3:1 (6:3, 6:2, 4:6, 6:3) to Croatia's Mario Čilić, while Troicki meekly succumbed to Spain's Tommy Robredo in straight sets, taking only five games in total.
