Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas says that the state and city governments have taken over the World Student Games 2009 project after a reshuffle in the organization. “The state of Serbia and the City of Belgrade have decided to take the World Student Games 2009 project into their own hands,” Djilas told journalists while visiting the University village in New Belgrade. State, Belgrade take over Student Games “We gave all the necessary guarantees, and some personnel changes have been made. We should be aware realistically that there is no reason to dwell on past setbacks and compete with cities that are a lot bigger and richer than we are, but we can do everything we can to make sure that the people who come to Belgrade feel great,” the mayor stressed. The changes in the organization’s administration were effected earlier this month. The government appointed Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic to coordinate all the work and stripped project director Sinisa Janic of all decision-making powers. Janic later resigned and the Belgrade First Municipal Court stated that an investigation was under way into Janic’s dealings, related to the purchase of equipment for Serbian athletes for the 2007 Games in Bangkok. “Janic’s resignation was a logical move after everything that happened in the past. This has facilitated the work of those who have taken over the project. The authorities are dealing with everything else. If the law has been violated, there will be a reaction,” Djelic said.
