Today is International Youth Day, with the main topics for discussion being climate change and AIDS. These topics were chosen because of the fact that climate change and the AIDS epidemic are already destroying society and exacerbating the impact of poverty and hunger in the world. Serbia to mark International Youth Day The Day is being marked in Serbia as well—young people from the “Play for Life” organization yesterday staged a performance in Republic Square in order to focus attention on the issues. The idea of the performance was to have the voice of the young heard symbolically through silence, so the choreography was performed without any musical accompaniment. The performance was a direct response to the fact that HIV and AIDS affect young people the most. Half a million new cases of HIV infection have been registered among people under the age of 25. Vojislav Arsic of the Youth Peer network said that the plight of young AIDS sufferers in Serbia was very difficult. Tatjana Petrovic, who took part in the performance, said that it was important for young people to be more active, especially when AIDS was concerned. Today’s generation of youngsters do not know a world without AIDS. Nonetheless, many young people still do not know enough about HIV and AIDS to protect themselves from the disease. Of 12,000 people infected every day around the world, more than half are under the age of 25. International Youth Day will be marked today with a series of music and dance performances at Ada Ciganlija beach in Belgrade this afternoon.
