The first and second phase of the UXO clear-up operation around the former arms dump in Paracin are over. The third phase of the clear-up is due to begin this Fall. Arms dump clear-up enters phase three Momcilo Vuckovic, the head of Civil Defense Headquarters in the town, told the media that thus far, about 450 members of the Serbian Army (VS) and Ministry of Defense had been involved in the operation. In total, 89,649 items of various unexploded ordnance (UXO) had been destroyed so far over an area of 799 hectares around Karadjordjevo hill, close to Paracin. The third phase of the search would be performed using metal detectors that can detect as deep as 50 centimeters, which, Vuckovic said, were international standards for humanitarian mine clearance. These instruments have so far been used over 95 hectares, leading to the discovery and destruction of 140 items of UXO. Vuckovic thanked the local authorities, the police, emergency services, the media and members of the public for their understanding, and assured that the intensity of detonations would be considerably reduced now, given that the majority of UXO had been discovered. He warned members of the public to remain on their guard, and not to touch any suspicious objects they might come across, but to inform the police. The explosion of the arms dump close to Paracin took place on October 19, 2006. A large number of residential and office buildings were damaged in the blast, while repairs in Paracin and in nearby Cuprija are still ongoing.
