Three Serbs return to KPS

Three Serb officers have returned to the Kosvo Police Service's (KPS) station in Gračanica, according to Priština daily Zeri.

Three Serb officers have returned to the Kosvo Police Service's (KPS) station in Gracanica, according to Pristina daily Zeri. Quoting KPS spokesman Veton Elshani as the source, the daily states that a total of 11 Serb officers will be returning—five in Kosovo Polje, and three each in Lipljan and Gracanica. Three Serbs return to KPS The Serb police officers took the decision on Sunday before their suspensions expired, at which point police headquarters would have been able to dismiss them. About 300 Serb KPS officers in Pristina and Gnjilane handed in their badges and weapons in February, in protest at Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence. They asked to remain on the force, but only on condition that they receive their orders from UNMIK, not the KPS in Pristina. This request was turned down, and the KPS decided to suspend them for three months. On leaving the KPS, the majority of officers signed a contract with the Serbian Interior Ministry, which took over responsibility for paying their salaries. Of the KPS’ total contingent of some 7,000 officers, about 10 percent were Serbs.

They asked to remain on the force, but only on condition that they receive their orders from UNMIK, not the KPS in Priština.
