Religion Minister Radomir Naumov met with reis of the Islamic Community of Serbia Adem Zilkic yesterday. They concluded that Muslims in Serbia enjoyed the same Constitutionally guaranteed rights as worshippers of other faiths and churches, and that their rights were not under threat. Minister meets Serbian Muslim leader According to a statement issued by the Religion Ministry of Religious, Zilkic asked for the Riaset of the Islamic Community of Serbia, as the highest body of the Muslim community in Serbia to be officially registered under the Law on Churches and Religious Communities. "The reis informed the minister of the problems his Islamic Community of Serbia faces as a result of the unresolved problem of single leadership in the Islamic religious community," the statement said. Naumov said that the common interest of the state and its Muslim believers was to resolve this problem as soon as possible to prevent any further undesirable and unnecessary conflicts among Muslims. “Conflicts such as these are not in the interests of anybody who has good intentions in Serbia, and the Ministry respects the autonomy of churches and religious communities,” the minister stressed. “The best solution would be for this problem to be resolved through an agreement within the Islamic community,” said Naumov, reiterating on several occasions that only one Islamic community existed in the eyes of the government, and that the resolution of internal conflicts was not the responsibility of the state. The conflict in question stems from the discord between the Novi Pazar-based Meshihat of the Islamic Community in Serbia, headed by Mufti Moamer Zukorlic, whose spiritual center is in Sarajevo, and the Islamic Community of Serbia, headed by Zilkic, whose center is in Belgrade.
