Some 10,000 people gathered in front of Belgrade Town Hall to welcome home Australian Open tennis champion, Novak Djokovic. The crowd chanted “Nole, Nole“ and “Nole, we love you“, and all around were banners with messages such as “Nole champion“, “Nole king“, “Only one Nole“, “Nole number one“ and “Nole, see you after Roland Garros“. Crowd of 10,000 welcomes Djokovic home “I can’t believe you’ve all come just because of me... This triumph has got me thinking back, remember everything I’ve been through, remembering how you welcomed home the basketball team, the volleyball team... and now me,“ Djokovic told the crowd from the balcony, adding that it was an unreal feeling. Proceedings were led by actor Dragan Jovanovic, and before the tennis player made his entrance to the accompaniment of balloons and confetti, the crowd were treated to a concert by the pop group, Van Gogh. At Djokovic’s request, the crowd gave a big cheer for Serbia’s other senior representatives at the Australian Open. “I can’t describe how grateful I am to you. Particularly as you got up so early in the morning to watch my matches, left school and work early,” he said, before tossing t-shirts, caps, tennis balls, and a racket into the crowd. Djokovic expressed the hope that in 10 to 15 years time, his younger brothers Marko and Djordje would be appearing on the town hall balcony too, before thanking Belgrade, Serbia, and all those who had come from Republika Srpska, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Croatia to see him.
