Niš hepatitis epidemic continues to spread

Director of Nis Infection Clinic Zarko Rankovic says the number of infected people in the city has risen above 430. In the last 24 hours, 53 new patients have been admitted to the clinic with symptoms of the illness. Nis hepatitis epidemic continues to spread “This is the height of the epidemic, and soon the number will start to fall. There were 34 new victims yesterday, and more today. It’s important that that number doesn’t exceed 50 a day,” Rankovic told Beta. He added that of the 53 patients showing the symptoms of the hepatitis A virus, 47 were from Nis, and four had been hospitalized. Over the last few days, fifty or so people diagnosed with hepatitis have been reporting to the clinic daily, while the drop to 34 new cases yesterday was viewed as a positive sign by local health workers. Nis epidemologists claim that the disease has been spread through contact, although the cause of the epidemic is hard to determine because of the long incubation period. On Friday, the Nis Health Institute declared a hepatitis epidemic in the city brought about by the Hepatitis A virus.
