Former reservists say that they have come to an agreement with the government to end their strike. The ex-servicemen from the south of Serbia, who have been demanding reimbursement of wages they claim are still owed to them dating back to the Kosovo conflict in 1999, ended their protest in Belgrade after yesterday’s talks with government representatives, and went home. Reservists strike finally over “We’ve received assurances that we’ll be paid what we’re owed, interest included. As far as we’re concerned, this agreement means the end of the protest,” said strike leader Dejan Milosevic, adding that payment would be effected following adoption of the 2008 budget, and that the reservists would receive between EUR 6,370 and 8,900. Milosevic scheduled a new meeting of the reservist delegation on Wednesday, where, as he said, the agreement would be elaborated. “If the agreement is broken, reservists will come to Belgrade in their masses and protest until our demands are met,” he warned. Prime Ministerial Adviser Slobodan Lalovic confirmed that a meeting had been held, but that there had been no talk of paying the difference. “We agreed that after adoption of the budget we would discuss how we could improve these people’s socio-economic situation. We didn’t agree on any specific amounts,” said Lalovic. During four earlier meetings, the adviser had offered the reservists, on behalf of a government working group, material assistance to help the families of the poorest reservists and stimulate production in the Toplica region. This proposal was turned down by the ex-servicemen, who subsequently resumed their protest. Justice Minister Dusan Petrovic said on Thursday that there had been cases where certain reservists had been overpaid, and who had subsequently been sued, while legal proceedings had been launched against certain judges to determine responsibility. The reservists began their protest two months ago in their own town, and have since had a number of unsuccessful meetings with the authorities.
