Work on the first safe-house for victims of domestic violence will be completed in the next few weeks. Completion of the second is expected at the end of the year. First safe-house for victims of domestic violence The safe-house has been built according to all the recommendations of the Council of Europe (CoE) and is due to be handed over for use by the Advisory Board for Domestic Violence in the next month or so. CoE and government representatives toured the building site, with B92 playing the part of host. Construction of the first shelter for female and child victims of domestic violence is slowly reaching completion. The safe-house is made up of two identical shelters. The first building will be opened in a few weeks, and the other a month later. Once the shelter is fully built, it will be able to hold around 40 victims. CoE Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer says that one of the institution’s priorities is to stamp out violence against women. “The CoE has launched a campaign against domestic violence, and has called on our member-states to use all necessary laws and measures to protect the victims,” said de Boer. The house will be handed over to the Advisory Board for Domestic Violence. The organization’s coordinator, Vesna Stanojevic, said the situation was alarming. “We’ve been working with safe-houses for seven years, and we take care of a large number of women and children. So far, we’ve taken in 1000 women and 970 children,” said Stanojevic. “That means that this form of care is very important and necessary in the situation we find ourselves in,” she says. She added that women had access to courses and employment programs, with the result that 92 percent of those who left the house were employed and economically self-sufficient. The big problem of such shelters was that they had no certain source of funding, said Labor and Social Affairs Minister Rasim Ljajic. In Belgrade, there are three facilities housing 62 victims of domestic violence. The interior of the safe-house (B92)
