Serbia’s youth favors joining EU

85 per cent favor joining the EU, 36,1 per cent unconditionally, while 48,6 per cent wish to see certain conditions met first. Only 8,1 per cent have declared themselves unconditionally against joining the European Union. The poll was conducted prior to the suspension of the EU negotiations.

“The young see the government as the principal force that should drive toward the EU membership, followed by themselves and NGOs. The church, pensioners and the left-wing parties are seen as the elements hampering such a development. 80 per cent see the Hague cooperation as the condition set for Serbia to join the Union, but only 43 per cent would be ready to meet that condition”, NGO’s representative Aleksandar Gubaš told B92.

As far as other conditions are concerned, 50 per cent of those interviewed would be ready to harmonize domestic legislature with the European standards, fight corruption and stabilize the economy. 46,9 per cent favor improvement of relations with the countries in the region.

The young see the following as the key European values: democracy, free market, rule of law, stability and tolerance. “Youth Takes Action” representative Martina Petrović however points to one of the survey’s results that causes concern. “30 per cent reject the condition of improvement of the ethnic minority rights, which means that one third of the young people interviewed would not accept for the minority rights to improve. In my opinion that is a worrying result”.

33 per cent of those taking part in the poll believe Serbia will join the EU sometime between 2011 and 2015, while 18 per cent believe this will happen in 2020. Only nine per cent think Serbia will become a EU member prior to 2010.
