Belgrade University among top 500 on Shanghai list

BELGRADE -- The University of Belgrade has claimed a place among top 500 world universities for the first time in its history long over two centuries.

“The university holds the place close to the 450th position which makes it the best university in the region, as it left behind the University of Ljubljana and the University of Zagreb which also applied for the list,” Belgrade University Rector Branko Kovačević said.

“Although the Shanghai list is an informal document, it is a matter of prestige to have a place on it, because it includes only two percent of all world universities,” the rector said and added that the University of Belgrade had been trying for three years now to qualify among top 500 world universities.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is conducted by Shanghai University and the criteria it considers includes scientific research, influence on science, number of citations of works, turnout in certain areas and the influence of universities in the region.

Commenting on the slightly weaker ranking on the webometrics list, where Belgrade University holds the 547 place, Kovačević noted that the problem with both lists was that the University of Belgrade was still not visible and that it did not have access to the data presented to the public because the adequate information system was still lacking.
