A young stray dog found mutilated last spring, whose ordeal caused outrage in Serbia and abroad, found a new home on Christmas Eve. Mila, a one-year-old mixed breed found in a state of shock hiding under a car in Belgrade in April with all four of her paws cut off, has been adopted by the Carnic family. Mila the dog joins her new family Her recovery is deemed complete, and her new home is now in the Belgrade suburb of Jajinci. Dusan Carnic addressed journalists as he welcomed Mila into his home, to say that despite reports that his family was exalted at having been selected to adopt the dog, the prevailing feeling was that of shame. "In a way, we feel guilty that this has happened in Serbia and in the city where all four of us were born. This should never have happened," Dusan Carnic said. Since April, Mila was in the care of the Belgrade Veterinary Institution, whose doctors did all they could to ensure that she would have as normal a future as possible. Mila has been successfully fitted with removable prosthetic paws, and the Rudo Institute that manufactured them will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments if necessary, it has been announced. The news about the severely mutilated dog sparked outrage in Serbia, and saw many people donate to the Mila Fund set up by B92. Part of the funds collected will now be used to set up an emergency service to rescue abused or injured animals, while the City of Belgrade has announced the formation of a new police unit that will deal with cases of animal cruelty, which is a felony crime in Serbia. Meanwhile, the police investigation into the case continues, while the person or persons who committed the monstrous act against Mila contunue to walk the city streets free.
