Based on a NATO Council decision, KFOR will today hand over its duties related to the protection of Gazimestan to Kosovo police, KPS. The memorial near Pristina was built to honor Serb heroes – the fallen soldiers of the medieval Serbian state, who clashed with invading Ottoman Turks in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. Kosovo police guard Serb monument KFOR, EULEX and KPS officials will attend the handover ceremony, it has been announced. KFOR said that the move reflected "the trust of NATO and nations that contribute to KFOR that the Kosovo police has the ability to perform this important task". According to reports, KPS will be "monitored, guided and counseled" by EULEX. KFOR will continue to monitor the security of the monument's perimeter via patrols and aerial surveillance, it was reported. KPS said that they were "ready and capable" of taking over the protection of "all cultural and religious structures in Kosovo" and expect that they will be guarding "other Orthodox cultural and religious structures".
