BELGRADE --
Epidemiologist Branislav Tijodoroviĉ says that the swine flu mortality rate is not higher than that from seasonal flu.
Although the epidemiological situation in Serbia is not favorable, there is no reason to panic, because this first larger wave of swine flu infections was expected, says Tijodoroviĉ, who is a member of a government work group set up to monitor the epidemic.
He told B92 that should not change their behavior significantly, and that usual precautionary measures taken in any flu season would suffice.
“The mortality rate from the new virus is not any different or higher than that from common seasonal flu we face every year. We should not act any different than usual during a flu season – it is enough to wash your hands more often, use wet tissues and avoid direct contact with the people who have a cold. Going to public places, concerts, movies or cafes is not considered particularly risky.”
Tijodoroviĉ also explained who is considered be most at risk.
“Patients suffering from chronic cardio-vascular, respiratory diseases, diabetes fall into the category at risk, and the virus H1N1 could cause complications. It was exactly what happened with the pensioner from Ĉuprija, who died on Wednesday.”
Three more people died of swine flu in Serbia, which officially has 224 registered patients.
