Serbia's Balkan War defeat of Turks commemorated
26 October 2009 | 12:38 | Source: Tanjug
KUMANOVO -- Wreaths and flowers were laid at the monument to the Serbian Army on Zebrnjak Hill, Macedonia, on Sunday.

Officials and a large number of citizens gathered there to commemorate the Battle of Kumanovo where 97 years ago the Serbian Army won an important First Balkan War victory over the Turks.

Ministry of Labor State Secretary Zoran Martinović was there on behalf of the Serbian government, pointing out to the importance of remembering our glorious ancestors and the need to create a different future based on understanding, respect and non-violence.

Martinović said that the Serbian community in Macedonia had helped in organizing the ceremony to mark the anniversary. He pointed out that it was necessary for Serbia to commemorate all events which remind of her glorious victories but also of great suffering of both soldiers and civilians.

The Serbian Army fought against superior Turkish forces on October 21 and 22, 1912, and despite suffering great losses managed to win and bring freedom to these Serb areas after more than five centuries under the Turkish invasion.

The ministry of labor organized for the best students and high school seniors from the Serbian military and police academies to also attend the ceremonies.

Miroljub Aranđelović Rasinski’s music was performed in the artistic part of the program dubbed, "Those who crushed the force", organized by Cultural-Educational Community of Serbia and directed by Marija Bišof.

Actors Nebojša Dugalić and Ivan Jevtović, opera singer Goran Krneta and the Braća Baruh Choir from Belgrade conducted by Đorđe Stanković also took part.

The monument to the Kumanovo heroes – work of distinguished Serbian architect Momir Korunović – and was erected in 1937. Only five years later, most of it was destroyed by the Bulgarian occupation forces.

The monument’s crypt is the final resting place of several hundred Serb heroes who died in the battle.
