"New ID cards needed in Kosovo"
7 October 2009 | 09:40 | Source: Beta
PRIŠTINA -- More than 10,000 Serbs in Kosovo have taken out new personal identification cards over the last year.

The main reason for this is that pensioners will not be entitled to their pensions after September 1 without the new document.

The Kosovo Interior Ministry has taken specific measures to help members of all communities in order to get their personal identification cards on time.

Kosovo Interior Ministry adviser Artan Duraku said that the new ID cards were mandatory.

In Gračanica, the largest Serb community in central Kosovo, the government building for issuing personal documents is in ruins, which could be said to reflect relations between Kosovo Serbs here and the provincial institutions.

However, the center still receives at least 50 applications for new documents each day.

Most Serbs who have taken out new I.D. cards are senior citizens, for whom pensions are an absolute must.

Kosovo Labor Minister Nenad Rašić said that most Serbs in Kosovo had little money and were on social welfare programs from the Kosovo budget.

The average pension in Kosovo is about EUR 50. All people over the age of 65, regardless of whether they have worked anywhere or not, have the right to a pension.
