Tuesday will mark the five year anniversary of the torching of the mosque in the center of Nis. The protests in this southern Serbian city came following the ethnic Albanian violence against Serbs in Kosovo on March 17, 2004. Five years since burning of Nis mosque The Islam-Aga mosque was set on fire in Nis on that day. The mosque was built in 1720 and protected under law since 1954, and has been rebuilt since completely, except for the minarets. “The minaret is a message for such things to never happen again,” the mufti of the Islamic Community of Serbia Muhamed Jusufspahic said today. He added that the restoration of the minaret was left purposely for a later date. “Whatever gatherings there are, the mosque is always the target. All the events regarding Kosovo and the general inter-personal relations on the territory of the former Yugoslavia are still not based on human foundations. We cannot accept all the anger being directed at the minorities,” Jusufspahic said. One person was sentenced to five months in prison for the torching of the mosque, seven received three month sentences, while two were freed of all charges. Judge Katarina Randjelovic said during the sentencing that “violence in one place does not justify violence in another” and that those convicted “could have put Serbs in Kosovo in danger with their actions”. During the protests in February of last year after Kosovo Albanians unilaterally declared independence, several attempts were made by the protesters to approach the mosque, but strong forces of police and Gendarmerie forces were securing this holy place for several days.
