Belgrade is the only global center where complete sex reassignment is possible in only one surgery, Novi Sad daily Dnevnik writes. The paper says that, thanks to Doctor Sava Perovic, some 200 transgender men and women have so far undergone this procedure, most of them from Serbia and Montenegro. A team of doctors will at the end of October perform surgery on the first Serbian patient that will not pay for the procedure, since the World Health Organization has listed transsexualism as a disease. Therefore this, and all future patients, will have their surgeries paid for by Serbia's state fund for health and social insurance. "A complete transformation during a single surgical intervention, for example from female to male, includes a removal of the female genitals, internal and external, and a reconstruction that creates male genitals complete with testicles, urinary tract and so on," Djordjevic explained. This operation lasts some six and a half hours, he added. Djordjevic also revealed that it is "easier to make a woman out of a man, because it's easier to reconstruct female than to create male genitals, that will be functional". Beside the surgery, the patients also receive life-long hormonal therapy.
