VS plane crashes, kills pilot

BELGRADE -- A G-4 airplane, used in pilot training by the Serbian Army (VS) Air Force, has crashed at the Batajnica airport, near Belgrade, on Wednesday.

B92 has learned that the pilot did not survive the accident.

The victim has been identified as Ištvan Kanas, one of the top VS pilots.

The 43-year-old father of two was a test pilot and a member of an acrobatic group with the Air Force.

According to the army, Kanas was practicing for an upcoming air show at the time of the crash.

The plane, known by its full name Supergaleb G-4, is made is Serbia, and used since the 1980s in training, as pilots progress toward flying jets.

The last time a G-4 was seen in public was during a recent VS officers' graduation ceremony in Belgrade.

The Ministry of Defense will hold a news conference later on Wednesday.
