Kosovo citizens want the press to focus more on social and economic issues than recognition of Kosovo’s independence. Research by the Institute for Ethnic Relations in Pristina shows that Kosovo citizens trust the media, and expect more coverage of the fight against corruption in society. Kosovo citizens: Economy, before politics In a report published in Pristina entitled “The Credibility of Written and Electronic Media in the Eyes of the Kosovo General Public”, it is stated that five age groups between the ages of 18 and 65 took part in the study, and that most attention was paid to citizens between the ages of 18 and 45. The research was conducted during July and August with the goal of gauging the attitude of the media to changes and political processes in Kosovo. “The citizens of Kosovo need to receive information that is fast, correct and concise. However, Kosovo citizens are still unable to appraise the possibility of control over the media by the government,” the report states. The majority of those interviewed believe that the government is not focusing enough on social and economic needs. Nor do citizens want to see media indifference in relation to their social problems, such as poverty and unemployment. A total of 28.2 percent of respondents say that being completely informed is a priority requirement for a democratic country, while 26.9 percent say that fast and accurate news is their chief demand. 52 percent believe that the media can do a lot to uncover the phenomenon of corruption in Kosovo, which, the report says, attests to the trust that the local media enjoys among citizens. The biggest criticism of the media is its indifference towards tackling organized crime. According to the survey, the most read newspapers are Kosova Sot, followed by Koha Ditore, Infopres, Lajm, Zeri, Ekspres, Epoka e Re and Bota Sot. Among television stations, the public service RTK Kosovo is the most watched, followed by RTK 21 and KTV. According to the survey, the main priority of Kosovo citizens is no longer the issue of the province’s unilaterally proclaimed independence, but social interests. 59.9 percent of citizens believe that the media should treat social problems, poverty and unemployment as priorities, instead of politics, which only 16 percent of citizens see as a priority.
