Classes for about 200 schoolchildren in the Gora municipality in Kosovo did not start on Monday. The Nebojsa Jerkovic elementary in Dragas did not start the new school year today because teachers had refused to sign contracts with the Kosovo ministry of education, and were prevented from entering the school. Schools in Gora face crisis Local municipal president Alija Abdi told Tanjug that the teachers in Dragas had been barred from entering the school because they did not have contracts with the ministry and that children could not attend classes. Abdi said that this was "a tried and tested system of Kosovo institutions intended to force the children and teachers to replace the Serbian Education Ministry curriculum by the Kosovo one". He said that Kosovo institutions were "trying to use threats to prevent classes in other schools in Gora". The area is predominantly inhabited by the Gorani ethnic minority. "Only the Serbian curriculum is appropriate and provides real education to the children, and this is the stand of most parents," Abdi said. Due to all this, some of the Gora students are attending classes in two private houses in the village of Krusevo, reports say. About 1,200 children in Gora are educated according to the official Serbian curriculum.
