Mandić was a member of the Spartak Mountaineering Club.

According to the Vojvođanska Ekspedicija web site, an accident took place during the final push towards the summit, at an altitude of more than 8,200 meters, near the so-called Bottleneck that has claimed the lives of at least 15 climbers in the past.

The rest of the team, Predrag Zagorac and Iso Planić, have set off camp for C3, and will return to base camp today.

The Serbian team began their climb to the K2 summit on Sunday.
